And Now the Fun Begins
And with this email, the HTML WG now officially has two published branches of the HTML 5 specification.
My first reaction when I saw this email? What a clusterfuck.

The WG itself is flawed
Is it official, or are they still trying to work out differences? I tried reading through the thread, but it seems the mailing archives are next to useless.
There's no "all mails in this thread" to click on, so I had to scroll through the whole of August (which has just begun, thankfully).
From what I read, they were trying to settle their differences, and went from five specs to two. Has JF's proven too hard to crack, and so it was officially raised as a second version? Or will there be a vote, soon, in the event that differences can't be worked out?
I think the biggest problem I've seen on the mailing lists is that people usually address each-other as if they were getting personal emails, rather than treating the entire working-group mailing list as one big pool of inter-related data. People should at least scan every message that comes through.

No, it seems as if this vote
No, it seems as if this vote will be official.
I think putting out a separate document was premature, and jumped the gun. And Sam has conflated the issue so much, you don't know what you're voting on.
Badly managed is the least of what I can say about all of it.
